Canta Ceifeira
The Portuguese rural landscape evokes cognitive dissonance. From an external, ‘city dweller’ perspective, it may seem like a place of permanence, peace and calm. However, a closer look at the history and living conditions in an isolated area (far from the coast) reveals constant impermanence, a high level of entropy and, often, tragedy. Although this impermanence may convey the idea of chaos, it is ultimately the essential element for achieving homeostasis in a self-regulating living organism. The coexistence of these two perceptions of rurality in a single person is not at all rare, given the ability of human beings to adapt to incongruity. This album is therefore an exploration of the conflict between permanence and impermanence in our perception of rural space, and how this antonymy feeds the richness and depth of an environment that tends to disappear (from memory and geography). This project was also inspired by my work as an artist and musicologist, in particular the way I incorporate something of this disappearing space into my creation. Released on 27 April 2022.
